World Class Lone Rangers

By Simon Hartley, Founder of Be World Class.

Last week I delivered a Keynote to a Global Conference in Dubai. The title was, ‘World Class Lone Rangers’. The audience was made up of highly specialised, expert engineers. These people have some pretty unique challenges. They often work in isolation; in remote parts of the world, cut off from phone or internet connections. They tend to work alone, or in very small teams. Added to that, they work in an environment that could be considered to be highly pressurised.

Hone Your Strategy

By Simon Hartley, Founder of Be World Class.

During the last few years I’ve been working with a number of corporate Executive Leadership Teams. In a recent session, a few weeks ago, one senior Director said, “We’ve got some great strategies… just too many of them”. Of course, they are not alone. I’ve come across a lot of people, teams and organisations that are simply trying to do too much. They have too many messages, too many initiatives, too many action plans and they’re not all tied together.

Are We All On The Same Page?

Simon Hartley, Founder of Be World Class.

Most people recognise that having a compelling common purpose is fundamental to the success of a team. In fact, there are a growing number of leaders and coaches who would argue that task cohesion (or goal cohesion) is far more important than social cohesion in a team’s success.

British Cycling’s Performance Director, Dave Brailsford told the BBC recently,

"I don't spend a nanosecond worrying whether they [Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome] get on,"

How to build confidence through preparation.

Simon Hartley, Founder Be World Class.

Over the years I have worked with a host of athletes and coaches. As the athletes approach competition the conversation inevitably turns to their confidence. I’ll often ask them how confident they’re feeling. Interestingly, many will answer by telling me about their preparation. I’m sure you can imagine the scenario.

Me - “How are you feeling?”

The athlete – “Good, I’ve had a great training cycle and I honestly feel in the best shape of my life”

The Art Of Team Selection; How To Create A Balanced Team.

By Simon Hartley, Founder of Be World Class

I’ve just finished watching a weekend of international sport. One of the real challenges for international team coaches and managers is team selection. Of course, this challenge isn’t limited to those leading the world’s best sports teams. It is a demand that many sports coaches and business leaders face on a daily basis. So, what can we learn from watching international sports teams?

How Much Time Do You Waste Unknowingly?

By Simon Hartley, Founder of Be World Class.

Many people’s initial response to that question is, “I don’t waste time”. We like to see ourselves as incredibly productive people. We don’t sit about twiddling our thumbs; we are always on the go and always looking to move forwards. However, the question is still valid. Being busy isn’t the same as being productive. Sometimes we simply use our time and energy on things that don’t contribute to our end goal.

Swamped By Metrics?

By Simon Hartley, Founder of Be World Class.

Do you find yourself swamped by metrics? Recently I have seen both corporate and sports organisations that have a massive amount of data, but they don’t really know how to make sense of it. Over time, it seems, they have gradually accumulated more and more metrics. They continually seem to find something else to measure and report. As the number of measures and metrics grows, they seem to lose sight of the truly important and very powerful numbers; it seems that they just can’t see the wood for the trees.

Is Multi-Tasking Really Beneficial...Or Even Possible?

By Simon Hartley, Founder of Be World Class.

It has become a bit of a cliché when talking about the differences between men and women. If we are to believe the conventional wisdom, women are able to multi-task far better than men. In fact, the ability to juggle multiple demands has often been portrayed as a strength. However, in recent years various teams of neuroscientists have begun to question whether multi-tasking is actually beneficial... or even possible.
